Show Your Support

Hey, Fake-Rob Williams here. OMG, can you even believe how well the color pink says "love"?

Anyway, it seems that "I Am Vermont Yankee," the official brand new web site created by Vermont Yankee as part of its ramped-up public relations campaign in advance of the legislative vote, is already kaput. So it goes around here. Everything breaks! You may think the official website works, and at first blush it seems to. But look behind the nice, green veneer. For example, absolutely none of the messages you submit to the "Show Your Support" section of the official web site will show up. I should know. I've been testing it all day. I sent in a message about certain financial shenanigans, and another one about pending environmental problems. Then I sent in one about the stoned control room operator, one about the guard who shot himself in the foot, and another one about the woman in charge of checking people for alcohol impairment. (She showed up drunk.) These are controversial issues, and we need support on all of them. Big time. So what's up with an official website that doesn't take my pleas for help?

With yet another vital gizmo at Vermont Yankee on the fa-junk, I've had to make do. And I have. I've frantically created this pink, alternate and unapproved, "I Love Vermont Yankee" site. It can do what its "cousin" site just plain can't--take your messages and display them. So please, use this site to tell the world your views on Vermont Yankee and to tell the world your ideas about our energy future.

If you do go to the broken, official site, you'll note right away that it features only Vermont Yankee employees that are Caucasian and have two rows of evenly spaced teeth. Good skin, good hair. Yeah. Got 'em. I've done the same thing with this alternate, pink site. In no way and in no place will I show people who are not part of the dominant culture. Nor will I show faces that have evidence of sloth, desperation, or, worse, drug and alcohol problems. How could I? Substance abuse, while part of our corporate culture, is not part of our corporate message.

Anyway, if you have something important to say about Vermont Yankee, send in your messages to this pink site by clicking on the word "comments," which you will find just below these paragraphs I've written. See there? Where the software-generated text says, "3 comments," or "12 comments," or whatever? Click on that, and then you will see a pop-up window that shows all the comments made so far and gives you a place for you to write a new comment.

Ah, technology. It's never easy, is it? Anyway, be oh, so brave and send a message to "I Love Vermont Yankee" now. G'wan. We want your support. Need it, I'd say.

I just found a beautiful article on the web about a small town in Germany that is off the grid, powering itself exclusively by biomass. It seems there could be implications here for some of our small New England towns. http://discovermagazine.com/photos/14-has-the-future-of-energy-arrived-in-tiny-german-village

We can't power everything this way, but to help with the electricity bills on individual houses, check out the nifty solar power absorbing paint. Every little bit can help. http://www.gadgets-reviews.com/index.php?page=post&id=443#addcomment

oooooh Fake Rob
I so love the color pink! How wonderful that you didn't pick either that icky radiation magenta or yellow.
And all the beautiful people... the systems engineer, chemical engineer, and air operated valve really show VY in the best light. Speaking of light, I'd like to spend a day at the beach with that environmental specialist for sure.... uh oh I think I just said that aloud.
Looking at your beautiful people pink site, its easy to see why you love VY. Such nice images remind me of their old slogan: clean, safe and not just reliable, but truly WOW.
I feel warm inside just by looking at your pink and dreamy site. Thank you Fake-Rob, it sure helps me forget about leaky valves, failing condenser tubes, stoned reactor operators, and the cracks in the steam dryer!

Look, I don't want to sound naive. And so let me give a nod to wind power, solar power, and tidal power, etc.--all solutions that could take us a long way in solving our entergy crisis (pun/typo intended). But let me also point out that, small scale, this stuff can be fun. Has anyone seen the site about DIY renewable energy projects? I highly recommend it. http://www.alternative-energy-news.info/diy/

There's a good list of Vermont alternative energy solutions and approaches at http://www.vtcommons.org/journal/2009/11/visionary-vermont-people-powering-21st-century-solutions-holidays-2009-web-exclusive

Fake-Rob, I love how tirelessly you work for such a great firm! Are your teeth straight and complexion clear. They should put your picture on the site too!

Oh, come now. Let's not all pile on Fake-Rob about his bad skin. And teeth. And, um, hair. And humor.

Note to all: Major power companies in Florida and New Mexico announced in late December that they would soon start buying large amounts of energy from certain solar power producers. http://cleantechnica.com/2009/12/26/two-of-the-countrys-biggest-solar-power-plants-get-utility-contracts/

I want to see the picture of the Decommissioning Plan planner. What a hunk he/she must be. Fat as Ken Lay or Bernie Madoff. What a great SCRAM, er, scam to pretend the cleanup will cost LESS in 2032 than in 2012, (see Feb 2008 decomm plan on the NRC website) underestimate the cost, refuse to top off the fund, and then after it runs out get the BAILOUT from state regulators just as Yankee Rowe, CT Yankee, and Maine Yankee did. Let the ratepayers eat yellowcake, I say. The taxpayers, well, we're saving the high level nuclear waste for them.
" Despite 32 years of operation, Yankee(Rowe) Atomic accumulated only $103 million, or 28 percent, of the necessary funds. The 10 utilities that own Yankee Rowe plan to raise electric rates in New England to cover the cost."

I think you left out one of the fork and spoon operators from Sector 7-G.

Here's the comment that I left:

Vermont Yankee is an accident waiting to happen. This jalopy is already running at greater capacity than it was initially designed. Collapsing cooling tower, leaks, escaping radioactive steam, and the deception that nuclear has a low carbon footprint (consider the mining and processing of nuclear fuel and vast amounts of carbon are used) are just some of the reasons to close this aging plant.

Wow, Rob, you really are working overtime. I had to run and get my special dark glasses to look at the hot pink. I was on the fence before, but this website has pushed me over. Of course, I guess that now means that I am within the safety limits of radiation exposure, but I'm sure that a little skin cream will cover up any open sores.

I hate to bring up any other pesky issues, like security guards who threaten the neighbors, tritium leaking into the river, or lax security that allowed 4 old ladies to break in...so I won't.

Keep up the good work! We so need that plant for our energy future. Without, there would be no need for this cool, pink, website.

VY employees are there for one of two reasons:

1) They really believe.

2) They need the job - especially these days!

Even a believer, when asked to be in the ads, likely thinks: "Whatever it takes to keep my job!"

Presuming they are real employees, it's a shameless abuse of staff.

I love VY b/c it's radioactive, baby!

Update 1/7/10: Hey did you see the new Vermont Yankee television commercial? It's at http://fakerobwilliams.blogspot.com/2010/01/wonderful-world-of-television.html

Those are real employees and they didn't do it to keep their jobs or because they are drinking the Entergy Kool Aid. Most people in this business have been doing it for awhile before they started working at VY. The majority of them either have an engineering degree or Navy Nuclear experience or both. They aren't local farmers who have been brainwashed by Entergy. Yes I'm an employee which means you probably don't care what I have to say but I'll say it anyway. We have all been trained in just about everything that has to do with radiation, contamination, metals, chemicals, ect. Do you honestly think I would put myself or my family in danger if I thought there were serious problems at VY. I got out of the Navy in 2008 and had job offers at 4 different nuclear power plants. I chose VY because of it's track record. Yes it has some problems but every industry does. The only difference is when a nuke plant has a problem you hear about right away and they are forced to fix it. Better then finding out there were known issues with the ash pond retention dam after it failed and flooded your town. I've read all these posts on all these different websites and from what I can tell, none of you would care if it wasn't in your backyard. Would a coal plant be okay? If you shut down VY, that's where you'll get your power from. Guess what, fly ash from coal plants gives it's host towns more radiation then the nuke plants do. But that doesn't matter where you get your power from because it won't be in Vermont so you'll still be able to call yourself the Green State.

please post the fox news interview with senator shumlin. the interviewer tried to get a clear answer out of the bumbling idiot. After a few questions about where the replacement power would come from, shumlin asserted several times that germany has ~30% of it's grid supplied by solar and if they could do it, by god VT could too. moments later they researched it, germany has less than 1% solar. (0.7% in fact) So who is lying to make their point? the answer is everyone, including the politicians that influence how you live. wake the f___ up.

Hello Earl,

I am right there with you. I'm in a technology program and a member of a reactor operator society. The people I have met are very knowledgeable and know that you are too with your intense Navy experience. I'm glad you posted to this site.
